Outfit Inspiration | What To Wear To Your Engagement Session

Planning outfits for your engagement session can be stressful for some couples. Many couples even told me they tried on every outfit in their wardrobe or went out shopping for new clothes just for their engagement photos. Or even worse, they didn’t know what to wear, so they just wore any old outfit they found in the back of the closet, I’m looking at you grooms. Choosing your outfits for your engagement photos can feel impossible, and sometimes it’s tough to even know where to start. Luckily, I have a few ideas for you to take into consideration when thinking about your outfits!

1. Match Styles — Dress Like You’re Going To The Same Party

Coordinating your outfits doesn’t mean you have to match exactly, but you should look like you're attending the same event. If one of you is in a formal dress and the other is in jeans and sneakers, it can create a visual disconnect—aim for a balanced, cohesive vibe that reflects your shared style.

2. Wear Something You Feel Comfortable and Confident In

Confidence shines through in photos, so choose outfits that make you feel your best. If you’re tugging at your clothes or feeling self-conscious, it can show in your expressions and posture. Stick with pieces that fit well and reflect your personality so you can relax and enjoy the session.

3. Light and Neutral Tones

Light and neutral tones photograph beautifully and tend to complement a variety of backgrounds, whether you're shooting in nature or an urban setting. These colors help keep the focus on you and your connection rather than overpowering the image. Soft hues also create a timeless, romantic feel that works well for engagement photos.

4. Dress Appropriately For The Weather

Dressing for the weather ensures you're comfortable and able to fully enjoy your session without distractions. Whether it’s layering up for a chilly fall shoot or opting for breathable fabrics in summer, the right outfit choices can keep you looking and feeling great. Practicality matters—if you’re freezing or overheating, it’ll be hard to look relaxed and natural in your photos.

5. Change Outfits — Something Casual Then Something More Formal

Bringing two outfits—one casual and one more formal—adds variety to your photo gallery and lets you showcase different sides of your relationship. A relaxed look captures your everyday vibe, while a dressier outfit elevates the session with a more polished, romantic touch. It’s also a fun way to play with different settings or moods during your shoot.
